Travel Booking
Tested on the Road
Bali, Chiang Mai, Da Nang, Lisbon. 100+ nights logged. Hidden fees published. No sponsor lies.
Booking.com EN
My reflex 4 years running
Widest inventory but rarely the cheapest in SEA
100+ nights, 11 countries. Almost everything is on it, from 25 USD hotels in Bangkok to guesthouses in Algarve. But careful: the displayed price does NOT include city tax, variable service fees, or currency conversion. I scan first then verify elsewhere.
Hostelworld
My reflex for tight budgets
Hostels and long stays sub-USD25/night
Hostels, dorms, private rooms nomad-friendly. On long stays 7+ nights, 30 to 50% cheaper than equivalent Booking. Honest reviews (nomads, not families). I use it whenever I stay 1 week or more.
100+ nights tested, 4 SEA cities + Lisbon.
Each verdict below is based on real paid bookings. Here are my 4 main bases.
- Bali
- Chiang Mai
- Da Nang
- Lisbon
Skyscanner
Saved me 340 USD Bangkok to Bali
Best price tracker for SEA flights
Not a hotel comparator but ESSENTIAL for flight discovery. Multi-stop tracker, price alerts 30 days, calendar view month cheapest. Booking redirects to OTA so verify total at checkout. I use it for discovery then book direct on airline if price match.
GetYourGuide EN
Bali tour = 22 USD saved
On activities, not lodging
Not a hotel comparator, but ESSENTIAL for activities on arrival. Bali tour, Lisbon walks, Bangkok cooking class: cancellation 24h before. I scout local guides then negotiate on-the-spot when cheaper offline.
Airbnb
Check final invoice BEFORE booking
Heavy hidden fees but monthly discount works
The displayed nightly price is misleading: add 12 to 18% service fee + cleaning USD30 to 80 fixed. On 2 nights, expensive. On 28+ nights with auto monthly discount -20 to -40%, comparable. I use it for long European city stays only.
Before booking your next night, ask yourself 3 questions.
- 01 Is free cancellation actually free? (read the terms)
- 02 Are taxes and fees included in the displayed price?
- 03 Photos = reality? (Google Street View + traveller photos)
Your booking comparator questions
-
How does Sarah really test 100+ nights per year?
I book with my own money (then collect affiliate commissions after testing). Bali 2021 (28 nights), Chiang Mai 2022 (42 nights), Da Nang 2024 (24 nights), Lisbon 2025 (18 nights) plus shorter trips. No comp nights, no platform sponsorship. See full methodology. -
Why is Booking.com not rated 10/10 if it is your reflex?
Because in SEA, alternatives often beat Booking by 8 to 22%. Hidden fees (city tax SEA +USD3.50, variable service +1 to 3%, currency conversion +2.5%) are never shown on the initial price. Wide but not honest on the total. -
Is Hostelworld only youth hostels?
No. Since 2018 they also list private rooms, shared apartments, budget hotels. On long stays (7+ nights), they beat Booking by 30 to 50% for the same quality, because hosts are nomad-friendly and offer manual discounts. -
Airbnb vs Booking for 28+ nights in a European city?
Airbnb wins on 28+ nights thanks to automatic monthly discount (-20 to -40%). Below that, Booking is simpler: fewer price surprises, cancellation more flexible, no fixed cleaning fee that breaks short stays. -
Is GetYourGuide useful if I know the city?
Yes for scouting local guides and reading reviews. But once on-site, many tours are 5 to 18% cheaper negotiating directly with the guide. I use it as a market guide, not as a systematic booking. -
Are you paid by the booking platforms?
Awin + CJ Affiliate only, on /go/ links. Zero direct sponsorship from platforms, zero payment to favor any of them. That is why Airbnb is rated 6.8 despite higher commissions: honesty before payout. -
How do I know the real price before paying?
Three reflexes: (1) add city tax (Bali 0, Bangkok 1 USD/night, Lisbon 2 EUR), (2) add service fee 1 to 3% (Booking) or 12 to 18% (Airbnb), (3) check exchange rate if non-USD payment. Methodology details the 12 verification points. -
Do photos match reality?
On Booking and Hostelworld: yes on average (chains plus recent reviews filter). On Airbnb: check Google Street View plus reviews with traveller-uploaded photos. I have a 4-step protocol to avoid surprises - see methodology.
